Love 'Em Or Leave 'Em: Boat Shoes?

When I started seeing boat shoes in stores and fashion editorials I thought they were awesome—comfortable, versatile, with a laid back preppy vibe—but I quickly found out that not everyone shared the sentiment. My boyfriend, for example, who, upon seeing a photo, said, "I guess if you really like them, I could learn to like them too." And my friend Katelyn, who was a bit more direct: when I picked up a pair while we were out shopping she grabbed them out of my hand and said, "Winona, seriously, you cannot buy these shoes." I asked her why and she replied, "Because they're ugly." So, what do you guys think? Are you rocking boat shoes or wishing this trend would hurry up and sink?
Sorry, but unless it's Halloween, I guess I'm never really going to get the whole skeleton aesthetic thing—keep your bones inside your body, I say! So this skeleton hand bracelet by Delfina Delettrez is less than appealing. What's next? Spleen rings? Intestine earrings? Yeah, yeah, I know, I sound like someone's mom. Seventeen-year-old Lindsey Wixson is one of the modeling world's biggest sensations, but life wasn't always Gucci, Prada, and miles of stark white runways. Before she broke big on the pages of W magazine, Wixson says she was bullied by girls in her class, who made fun of her for her gap teeth and height. "I actually had a group of girls who made a list of things they didn't like about me," she claims. But despite the early taunts, Wixson says she'd still like to return home to her native Kansas sometime soon because she misses her parents. "They keep me grounded," she says.
I'm fairly certain that I have an addictive personality. I've avoided drugs, gambling, cigarettes, and alcohol based on those suspicions, and likely will continue to do so until my dying day. But I got blindsided by my own addictive tendencies when I discovered the joys of personal style. After years of hating my body, I finally figured out that I could look and feel fabulous if I simply dressed to highlight my favorite physical features. It was an absolute revelation, and sparked a new-found, fervent love of clothing, shoes, and accessories. Soon, I fell into some pretty ridiculous and harmful shopping behaviors, the repercussions of which came to a head about three years ago. I had allowed my debt to grow exponentially over several seasons of frenzied acquisition. I'd begun making mental bargains with myself about how another $200 on the ol' MasterCard wouldn't make THAT much of a difference in my monthly payment, and I definitely needed those new Frye boots before fall arrived. I'd dug myself into quite a hole, and felt utterly incapable of clawing my way out.

Last week, I told you about my trip to Paris, in all its gorgeous, historic, delicious glory. This week I explored Italy with my mom and my brother Devin. My family is Italian but we'd never been to Italy, and from the people to the scenery to the food, it didn't disappoint. We went to my friend Milena's beautiful wedding on Lake Garda and then drove down to Rome, stopping in a couple seaside towns on the way but mostly trying not to die on the highways. I've compiled a list of Dos and Don'ts based on my experience—read on to check 'em out, and please share your own Italian travel tips in the comments!

Last week, I watched "This is England '86," the follow up mini-series to the 2006 film "This is England," about a crew of non-racist skinhead kids in England in the 1980s. Starring the same group of relative unknown featured in the original film, "This is England '86" centers on the story of Lol, a young skinhead girl who's at a crossroads in her romantic relationship and who must make a difficult family decision. I fell in love with the actress playing Lol—Vicky McClure, and her mod skinhead style. Lol is tomboy-ish without losing her essential femininity, tough as nails but sweet to the core. Be sure to check out the movies—and steal her style after the jump!

Celebrities often credit their red carpet ensembles to their stylists, but judging by these denim looks—their stylists didn't always do a good job. Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Jessica Simpson, Alicia Keys and Beyoncé have all worn double denim, high-waisted mom jeans and cutout vests that make you ask, "What were they thinking?"

That's not to say that no one can rock those looks –- Kate Moss did double denim the right way at Mulberry's spring 2012 show this week and Pippa Middleton looked cute in a denim dress a few months ago. But alas, not everyone can look as good as they do in denim, so check out the slideshow to see which celebs wore a denim disaster and tell us your thoughts below! Read more…

For a Mario Testino – shot beauty editorial in this month's Allure, 19-year-old Karlie Kloss wears very little makeup — along with very little of anything else. (A sample fashion credit: "necklace by Fenton, spandex thong by Victoria's Secret.") Though her modesty's consistently preserved, it's only thanks to some splayed fingers here and well-positioned bath bubbles there — and this not-really-a-scandal has some bloggers clutching their pearls and reeling from the shock of it all. Read more…
